Failed back syndrome or post-laminectomy syndrome is a condition characterized by persistent pain following back surgeries. Failed back syndrome, also called “failed back surgery syndrome”, refers to chronic back and/or leg pain that occurs after back surgery, usually after laminectomy, though this is a misnomer and such name is a generalized term to describe patients who experience pain after a back or spine surgery.
Contributing factors include, but are not limited to, residual or recurrent spinal disc herniation and persistent post-operative pressure on a spinal nerve. Despite receiving surgery from a doctor, there are many reasons a back surgery may or may not work.
The surgery has two goals: to stabilize a painful joint and to decompress a pinched nerve. However, spine or back surgery cannot just cut out the pain from a patient. It can only change its anatomy, though anatomical injury must be identified first. This is why, despite countless surgeries, such procedures are not effective due to the fact that the lesion that was operated on is not the cause of the pain that the patient is feeling.
